My Collection

Safety cards (also called safety instruction cards) are the cards which are usually located in the seat pocket in front of you. They serve the purpose of explaining passengers how to deal with certain emergency situations on board, show the emergency exits of the aircraft and the brace position.

You might wonder why one would collect these cards, for us collectors they represent an airline, an aircraft type and sometimes even an era. They can be considered little pieces of aviation history.

While it is forbidden to remove these cards from the aircraft, I have come across numerous flight attendants, pilots, airlines and even government institutions who were supportive of my hobby and gladly provided me with a few cards.

I am mainly collecting safety cards from Soviet/Russian/Ukrainian aircraft types (Yakovlev, Ilyushin, Tupolev, Antonov, Mil, etc.) and from Chinese aircraft types as well as Czech and Polish types. My favourite aircraft is the Yakovlev Yak-40 and these cards are always a priority for me. Furthermore, I especially like cards from "exotic" countries.

My passion for collecting started as a child when I was given my first card, a safety card from an Antonov An-2 which is stationed in Austria and operates sightseeing flights. Since then I have managed to get quite a few interesting cards and I am rather proud of my small collection. I like visiting collector fairs to meet fellow collectors, some of which have become good friends through the years. In the past I often went to the conventions in Prague, Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
